Bear cub Hansie loves to play outside but keeps getting hurt; his dad is always nearby with a bandage or other solace. So when Hansie notices that Dad is limping, he springs into action. Offering a quiet lesson in helping others, this story takes its time, for which the reader, encouraged to linger over the tender autumnal art, is rewarded.

This pleasantly rhymed counting book starts with one brown bunny searching for a friend. He invites increasing numbers of colorful animals to play, but they all decline, leaving poor Bunny alone. On the final page, however, everyone returns, and Bunny is delighted with his newfound pals. Expressive pastel-hued illustrations show Bunny's emotions as he goes from eager anticipation to gloom to joy.

Various baby animals love different things such as the rain, a rose, and the garden lettuces, among other fancies. Puppy, Kitty, Chicky, Goosey, Pony, and (human) Baby are some of the endearing characters that make their way through the comfortably repetitive text told in energetic rhyme. Watercolor and crayon drawings illustrate this soothing tale for very young listeners.

The reindeer are harnessed and eager to go, but Santa is nowhere to be found! Rabbits, foxes, polar bears, and seal pups all pitch in, searching high and low and finally uncovering a snow-covered Santa who's fallen into a snow drift. Bouncy rhymes and lively crayon and watercolor illustrations in pink hues depict the search and the happy rescue.

One day kindly Farmer Dale, a dog, picks up various stranded animals in his truck. After it breaks down, the animals band together and push the vehicle to its destination. The rhymes bounce, but the banal denouement--the animals are on their way to a talent contest--doesn't resonate. The crayon and watercolor illustrations of the expressive animals are appealing.

Jenkins makes good use of the parallels between elephant society and human relationships to help readers understand elephant behavior. The friendly text invites children to imagine themselves a part of the elephant community. While the text stops just short of anthropomorphizing elephant relationships, the animals' expressions in the illustrations are too human. This is sure to have appeal, but it stretches the science thin. Ind.

A "teensy" mole and a "wee little" mouse travel through the woods on a dark night while a ravenous bear becomes increasingly impatient. Well-drawn but Disneyesque crayon and watercolor pictures convey the tension that develops as the small creatures journey and the bear waits--for his friends to arrive for dinner.

Here's a read-aloud loaded with opportunities for preschoolers to make sounds and movements as they follow along with Mama Duck and her five little ducklings, quacking and hopping and plopping in the river. Bates's light watercolors follow the energy and humor of the narration, although they have difficulty showing danger: the wily fox looks cute and friendly.

Published spring 1998. Before a storm, Big Gander Goose declines offers of shelter from a mouse, a squirrel, and a rabbit, because Little Goosey wants "Just me and you." They finally find a dry space and are surprised the next morning to find the mouse, squirrel, and rabbit snuggled in with them. Delicate colored pencil and watercolors emphasize the pastoral qualities of the comforting tale.
